Thinking, speaking, acting and desiring against your nature is to set yourself in contradiction to, at war with, the law of your own being.
An animal cannot act in opposition to its nature. Animals unconsciously perform as their nature dictates. Human beings are the only creatures on the earth capable of acting against themselves.
But if you're confused about what or who you are, you keep doing what you think is best e.g., what your appetites demand - and hope it turns out OK.
When one pulls and pushes simultaneously he remains stuck. As often heard in our common parlance:
He kicks against the pricks.
He pisses into the wind.
He cuts off his nose to spite his face.
He makes a club that beats him.
The further he goes the behinder he gets.
He sows to the wind and reaps the whirlwind.
Pick whichever colloquialism suits. They all describe the counterproductive behaviors of confused and unhappy people.
Solomon described it this way:
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12
That you are dearly loved of God and made in His very image is incontrovertible. Our awareness of, and agreement with, this reality opens the frontier of discovering our true identity.
Refusal to accept or believe truth does nothing to alter it, but it does insulate you from its benefits. All men live daily soaked in the downpour of lavish blessings of which they had no hand in producing. They gladly gobble them up with nary a notice of how and from whom such showers pour.
One must know his nature in order to cooperate with it.
Consider what the writer of Hebrews wrote of man's origin:
“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor,
putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Heb. 5:6-8
You should probably read that again, real slowly. What an astounding birthright! Worth all of our humility and gratitude. Don't you ever wonder what He is like, who made us this way?
Would you have imagined how endearing and magnificent God's thoughts and ways are towards you? Even more, that He would fashion you in light of them?
If you've defied God's ideas about who you are, and His ways and means for your life, you will certainly be at cross-purposes. But there is a remedy for that.
How extravagant would be our joy to abide in Him! To yield our journey and destiny to His grand, eternal intentions. To enter and discover our original selves, and our highest possible good.
