Why did any of this catch us off guard? A nation that in the purity of its inception declares itself under God and swears to its citizens guardianship of the rights granted by God alone, makes a fearsome oath. Our founders entreated and expected God’s blessing and protection. God heard them. And His favor graced the people who humbly honored Him.
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were the inalienable rights we could not create or grant. But we swore to protect them. In the course of time, while awash in dizzying abundance, we grew estranged from the purity of our birth. We changed gods. We began to genuflect at the alter of our intellects and our impulses. We gave ourselves to self-indulgence in every imaginable way. By degrees we changed the meaning of words. We began to call evil good, and good evil.
In ways no one could ever have imagined, the rulers of this nation took the posture expressed by the prophet David in the 2nd Psalm:
The kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
“Let us tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us.
So stark was their rebellion, so haughty their pride, they wiped away the God-granted right to life for all citizens with the decree: “Every child of God may be murdered in the womb - for any reason, at any time.” This, they deemed good. Then and there, they spit upon the sovereignty of their Creator and protector.
Having usurped lordship over the life and death of the children they’d sworn to protect, they vainly imagine the blood of millions of babes in the womb will go unnoticed by the very One who formed them.
With seared consciences and brazen arrogance they now make war with God’s appointed sanctuary of safety, blessing and righteousness for His children - the family. In such a lightning trajectory of descent, should anything surprise?
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God. Heb. 10:31
If the God upon whom the United States of America was founded is the living Creator, He is not mocked, and we should be terrified.
If He is a pretend god, then no worries, our nation is founded on nothing. We won’t have Him to blame when we incinerate as we fornicate our way into the ash heap of history. And we won’t demand that an imaginary god apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.
Even still, for me (foremost) and anyone in need of mercy, the promise of God’s astounding forgiveness is extended:
If . . . my people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
