What’s your vision of Heaven. To forever be in the joy and communion with our Father God and our Savior Jesus and in the fellowship of the redeemed?
So, I wonder how much of this is being enjoyed at present - even in a finite measure? I’m thinking most Christians who take an honest 10 minute reflection on the subject find that apart from escaping the pain or drudgery of earth’s woes, there’s not a strong attraction up yonder. Some may imagine that in Heaven peace, joy and love will be wonderful. We know it will be good, we think, but we’re not sure how or why.
I’m thinking that many of us suffer from a delight deficit. We’ve heard the injunction to, Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Pr 37:4 But we have only sought the second part.
The Father who reveals Himself in waterfalls, canyons, glassy seas and frolicking dolphins. And who entices with sunsets, human hands and sparkling eyes. Who melts us with the concert of singing birds bathing in the gentle breezes of a summer’s evening. Every moment we breathe is fresh, new and gushing in wonder. This Father of ours is saying something. Are we hearing? Are we seeing?
If we behold such glory here in this land of shadows, what of the substance from which they are cast?
The giving God has strewn His plenteous invitations throughout all the earth. Behold, and enter. Consider the heart, the lavish love, the astounding, cascading beauty behind the vast array of tiny and grand displays.
If we allow impressions from the One who draws us to enter and kindle our affections, we will be changed. We’ll imagine and begin to embrace a delight so alluring, so intoxicating, so irresistible that all our springs of joy will burst with desire for more. And the happy, lavish and loving Father who dazzled and drew us, will never, for endless ages, disappoint.
Heaven’s not just more of the same. It’s the same - ever unfolding, ever expanding, ever awakening stream of perpetual glories, colors, and songs in endlessly creative varieties. It’s the effervescent fountain of ravishing wonders - eternally rippling waves.
If we don’t look beyond a glance at what is so readily revealed, or delight in the One who lures us, we’ll form a puny, self-elevating concept of Heaven’s rewards.
It’s not a surprise, then, that those who dismiss God’s bait might secretly muse, ‘that seventy-two virgins deal don’t sound too shabby.’
