We’ve been told that our Christian faith is not all about dos and don’ts.
Remember this one:
“Don’t smoke. Don’t chew. Don’t hang around with those who do.”
How about:
“Don’t gamble. Don’t ramble. Don’t leave your room all a shamble.”
(Actually, that one I just made up.)
Seems sometimes that bein’ a Christian ain’t no fun. The whole ‘deny self’ thing surely contains more than a few 'don’ts.'
We should know by now that when God says ‘don’t,’ He’s trying to keep us from destroying ourselves. When He says ‘do,’ He wants to open us to life.
How about this one: DON’T COMPLAIN
And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp. Numbers 11:1
That didn't work out so well for them. Our complaining is a stench unto the Lord. We don’t like it when our kids complain against us, either. Has God been unfair to us? No way! So, stop it. When the people repented from their complaining, God ‘cooled off.’
And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched. Numbers 11:2
DO BE THANKFUL:
In everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
When we are sincerely grateful, we make His praise glorious and open ourselves to the flow of His goodness. Do be exceedingly grateful and do make thanksgiving a strong theme in your character and behavior.
A thankful person brightens his environment.
