To believe a half-truth is dangerous. To believe the truth halfway is wholly pathetic. The one is deceived. The other has no peace, being too careful not to disregard the truth, yet too tentative to make it his own.
So he’s never quite sure it’s completely true. But to prove it he must fully give himself to it, which he’s not sure enough to do. Perhaps he’ll study a bit more, he thinks, then things will clear up. But like so many, he is:
Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 2 Tim. 3:7
Struggling to embrace a truth, to settle it, and plant your feet upon it is understandable. Indefinite unwillingness to commit, or (less discreetly) endless dithering, has the stench of cowardice.
