Proclaiming himself broad-minded, man’s faculty of reason seeks to accommodate every conceivable point of view. The problem is that ECPOV is based on some premise. One can acknowledge ECPOV, but the disciple of Christ cannot always embrace its source or premise. Because one can acknowledge and even articulate ECPOV one cannot confer equal credence or weight upon it. To nod with interest while listening to a man explain why being born on a Tuesday makes a person immune to the effects of poison ivy, is simple courtesy, not endorsement.
Adam and Eve were seduced by their desire to be broad-minded. Humans detest being perceived as simple or shallow. Satan made Adam/Eve feel simple-minded by suggesting that a truly wise person would realize that all of the trees were basically the same, that there was no rational reason to choose or not choose one over the other. And that to restrict him from eating from the special tree clearly proved an intent to conceal something from him.
It was just enough humiliation to put him on defense. Eve and Adam might have said something along these lines:
1. Let’s get a few things straight, I have my own mind and I make my own decisions.
2. I am neither intimidated nor afraid to consider other points of view.
3. You don’t have to tell me the fruit looks good, and tastes good, or who’s wise and who’s not. I wasn’t born yesterday.
Satan's suggestion, or taunt, was enough to dislodge him (them) from sound reason. He let himself get seduced into not merely considering another point of view, but to accommodate it. Accommodating a point of view is actually standing on its premise to get a look; in which case you’ve already lost the footing you had, and have placed overmuch weight on the POV you are only ‘considering.’
The intrigue of different concepts and ideas makes us easily bypass solid checkpoints. Such as, who is presenting this idea? Why is he interested in altering my present view? What is his premise? Who gains and how, from a particular outcome? These checks are vital. But once they are passed by, and we are entangled and distracted by the fascinating details of the new idea, they seem irrelevant. Now we’re giving foreign thoughts entrance into our mind without the context that such checks would afford. Now this strange fire is using the same furniture, utensils, and bedroom previously reserved only for family members. How easy was that? A stranger sharing bread with you?
So, man’s creator, who walked in daily fellowship with him, loved him lavishly. He gave him great powers, blessings, dominion, and provisions. He also gave him His word.
‘I give you all this to eat. It is wonderful and represents my desire for your good. Don’t eat of the center tree, or you will die.’
The pride of man, especially in his intellectual and logical powers, made him so vulnerable that he chose a complete vapor, a phantom, a nothing, over an absolute.
What he had was substantial. It was from a known source. It was from his life giver who had no other interest but his welfare. The entire garden was evidence of God’s daily provision.
Someone he didn’t know,
Told a story he’d never heard
Which contradicted all that’s true
And lied about the One whose word
Made heaven, earth, and all things, new.
