When I taught in the classroom some years back I resisted wearing a necktie. I resented the notion that merely wearing a tie made me a professional.
My principal had a different view, not to mention higher rank. He insisted that wearing a tie presents a professional and authoritative appearance to colleagues and to students. Now, I’m sure we’ve all had teachers who neither taught well nor behaved professionally regardless of what they were wearing. But he was my boss. So I wore the tie on the outside, but on the inside, I wore an attitude.
The reasons people wear particular clothing are as varied and unique as each person. Some to perpetuate an image. Some to brighten their mood. Some to project defiance. Some to pretend. The list is very long.
Dressing Bible-Style
The Bible has a lot to say about our attire. In fact, God set the bar for puttin' on the Ritz: The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The Lord has clothed and girded Himself with strength. Ps 93:1
The core of its fashion philosophy is very basic. What you wear should express who you are. Such is the purity and beauty of every motive of God’s heart - that His children freely express themselves in truth. Always, with God, is the immutable coherence of who He is, how He acts, and what He wears.
Each of us longs for authenticity. We admire it and pursue it. We measure it by how closely one matches the outward presentation of his life with his inward convictions. Pretending is for actors and comedians. We despise it in real people. Especially in ourselves.
Bible Fashion relishes variety, but not inconsistency.
Because you are a soldier in a war:
Don your belt of truth, put on the breastplate of righteousness. Tie on shoes to spread the gospel of peace. Take up the shield of faith, wear the helmet of salvation, and strap on the sword of the Spirit - the word of God.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Eph 6:12
Since you have been raised with Christ and:
Seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, take off those old clothes and put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience . . . And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Col. 3
Nevermore, upon arising, need you wonder 'what to wear?' or, 'what to do?'
Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness,
And let Your godly ones sing for joy.
(Ps 132:9)
My, but you're looking smart, today!
