When at last you find yourself
you’ll notice
how little of this glorious discovery
you can see
of things you created,
accomplished, or contributed
apart from the gifts and graces,
investments and sacrifices
of the many who sowed into your life.
This grand monument overwhelms,
obstructs self adulation,
and recalls silly childhood notions
when needing others
was still a happy thing.
To all those hands and hearts
attached to eyes and names and faces,
those seen and unseen agents,
who’s love and kindness enabled,
nourished and sustained you,
be quick O self-discoverer,
before this edifice of grace,
to fall prostrate in deepest gratitude.
From there,
in light so soft and low
observe the wonder of who you are,
and the extent of your potential.
Would you consider offering
your marvelously crafted instrument
to elevate,
to enhance the lives of others?
Not to appease a ridiculous notion
of paying back a debt,
but simply to play and sing the tunes
that sound like music
from a truly grateful heart.
