God does not exist to make you happy. That you exist at all is due wholly to his faithfulness, good pleasure, and boundless forbearance towards you. God is the original and perpetual goodness, omnipotence and perfect love. His long patience with you and his outstretched arm ceaselessly beckon you out from the shadows, into the dazzling light of a thousand summer mornings. Into the safe and comfortable wonder of his embrace.
And why?
Because union with him is your only possibility for happiness.
A parched man does not rail against the spring for not slaking his thirst. He kneels down and drinks.
