How is one whose mind is seduced and dominated by the demonic spirit of this age going to hear your logical, sweet presentation of why he needs Jesus more than any other philosophy or ideology or religion?
Power.
That's right, power.
When you present the Gospel as the Bible does to you, men are given a real choice. It is a demonstration that confounds the natural mind. It is a right and reasonable expression of our Savior and our Gospel. It forces the issue.
Mere words, rather than compelling, are simply mere words. Nothing that would rout sicknesses, or make demons shriek and scat. Bible knowledge sets no one free. The authority of Jesus’ Name exerted by believers does that. Any wonder that we, and Jesus, are mocked today?
If a man would happen to come to Christ due to your persuasive rhetoric, he is likely to understand the Christian life as ’a field of endeavor,’ a major to which he applies academic rigor in believing words, pondering and debating lofty ideas and ever pursuing more knowledge. The Christian faith in much of our ‘developed’ world is rife with such examples.
In contrast, when a desperate man runs to Christ having witnessed the powers of the age to come, he’s certain that this Gospel comes not with words but with power, and its Sovereign does not pose.
A gospel apart from power, isn't one. Though a man may spurn your entreaty or your manifestations of heaven’s powers, his conscience must face a stark reality: that these Christ-people are a kingdom apart from the religions of men because they act in the raw and merciful power he hungers for, but cannot find in the earth.
We represent a fierce and invincible Warrior, a holy and good Master, the supreme and uncontested King of every realm. The Lamb, and the Lion. Once upon a time His followers knew Him as Christus Victor. We must explain Him as He is.
