Once one believes that the trapeze will hold them, they will leap from the platform and swing away. If they must prove, or know it is safe before leaping, they’ll stick to the platform forever.
Then the platform people will gather to extol themselves for the soundness of their wisdom.
They’ll mock and jeer at the fools who’ve left their senses and leapt from reason. They’ll preach a balanced and reasonable lifestyle.
They’ll give scholarly lectures and write books to educate the masses about why it’s good to live on the platform like most normal people. They will tell tales of those who reached and fell, fomenting the fear that freezes wonder.
“How foolish would you be,” they’ll scornfully chide, “to swing away from sure footing into the wide-open, unknown air of make-believe?”
