Nowadays, most references to the sovereignty of God attempt to explain why God appears not to have done what He said He would do. The comments sound like this: “God is sovereign and will do as He deems with or without explanation."
Rarely is God’s sovereignty declared by asserting, “God has said it. He will do it.”
Simply stated, God is sovereign. He says and does what He wills. None can thwart His will. God has sovereignly expressed Himself in Jesus Christ - who said and did all that God wills toward us and for us. And, in case we might have missed it, He declares from Heaven, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.
We, however, can thwart God by saying that God didn’t mean what He sovereignly said. If we say, ‘No, in this (my) case He sovereignly overrides what He sovereignly declared.’
What, shall God unmake the world? Worlds are made whenever He speaks. God sovereignly declared, I Am God, your Healer. He accomplished His word of healing for all men in Christ; by His stripes you were healed. Will God now say, ‘I’ll take back those stripes in your case?’
Indeed, who are you to explain that the sovereign God didn’t mean His blessing and His healing for you? Look at Jesus. He is exactly what God means. Period.
A sovereign God does not send a missile (His intentions) from heaven to everyone on earth, and then divert that missile when considering exceptions for every person’s particular case. He has commanded His blessing to you with the same force and sovereignty He employed when He commanded light to shine out of darkness - when He created the world by the word of His mouth. Are you so special that you should be excepted? The sun shines on everybody - sovereignly. Are you exempt?
Playing the sovereignty card pretends to honor God in a way He does not wish to be honored. To spout high-sounding doctrines of God’s sovereignty while forfeiting the sure promises purchased by the blood of His own Son, is not a fitting faith.
God doesn’t need us to ‘excuse’ Him for not doing what He’s sworn to do. God more prefers that we brush aside appearances, shuck our lack of faith and believe Him.
