Jesus became a man. He relinquished all ability and authority to act as God. If he does all His wonderful miracles as God, that is awesome. But we’re not God, so we’re exempt from such requirements.
If, however, Jesus operated in concert with God using only human capabilities, we’d be obliged to do the same. As Bill Johnson frequently expresses: 'Jesus did what He did as a man, rightly related to God.' In other words, He showed us what is available to any man or woman willing to follow His example of humility and faith.
Jesus was quite plain about where and from whom His source of wisdom and power came:
I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. jn 5:30
The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. jn 14:10
Jesus knew something that prompted this astounding declaration: Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do.
He is not necessarily prophesying by that declaration. He is observing the reality of His own experience - being indwelt by the Holy Spirit and united (surrendered) to the Father. He’s fully convinced that every follower who believes in Him, will be and do like Him. It could be no other way.
The reason Jesus could say we’d do the works that I do is, because I go to the Father.
Here’s what happened - simply stated:
- “He made us alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, . . having nailed (them) to the cross.”
- We’ve become new creations, created in Christ Jesus for good works
- “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
- “Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.”
- “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.”
See, Jesus cleaned us up, united us with our Father, and equipped us with the same power He had.
Knowing we would have the same Spirit within us that He had, He stated emphatically that we would do the works He did. Not because we’d have more or other capabilities, but because the same Spirit that would raise Jesus from the dead would abide in us.
As with Jesus, we do not speak or do in our own authority. We are sent out by Jesus in just the same manner that He was sent by the Father. Hear Him ever speaking, Lo, I am with you always.
