When God is being Himself, no matter who’s watching, He does good deeds. He seeks and rescues. He mends broken hearts. Feeds the poor. Comforts the grieving. Lifts the downcast. He heals people’s diseases, crushes their enemies, and crowns them with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
We know God does this because Jesus is the express image of His person, and the complete explanation of our Creator’s heart.
But you can shut God up. You can thwart Him. Not because you’re stronger than Him, but because of what He’s given you - the right of refusal, and the right of way.
Presently, Jesus does not roam the earth. But His raging passion for redeeming souls has never waned. As His new creation, you’ve become His instrument of purpose - a freeway through which He may do His wonders.
When we say in response to Jesus’ assignment to do His works and proclaim His Kingdom,
‘Oh, I don’t feel worthy to do what you ask,’ or,
‘I’m not big on talking religion to people,’ or,
‘That (whatever thing the Holy Spirit is urging you to do) is really not my gift,’
. . . then we’re no longer the highway on which to transport the gifts He purchased to answer their need.
Instead, we're a roadblock, I guess.
From the wilderness the Lord prepared for Himself a straight highway in the desert, through you. He filled in your valleys, leveled your mountains and smoothed out your rough places - that His glorious salvation may be brought to everyone you touch.
Oh, don’t forfeit being His uniquely qualified road of preference to deliver His treasures to people in your family, workplace, and sphere of influence. You are the way of the Lord - the only avenue having direct interface with those you contact. Jesus gets to encounter everyone you encounter, through you.
When we litter the highway with excuses, set up roadblocks of unbelief, or leave it strewn with the debris of indecision, we force Him to seek alternative routes. Finding no clear pathway in and through our hearts, He travels our road less and less.
