Something’s Wrong!
Everything was good. Now, something’s wrong!
What do you think when you see a child with cleft lip and palate? What feelings stir inside you?
Suppose you had a daughter all grown up, married and ready to deliver her first baby, but you were concerned about her spiritual condition. Would you wish for her to have a baby with cleft palate? This could humble her heart and teach her the true meaning of love and sacrifice. She could develop a tender compassion for people and love more like God loves.
Isn’t that what God does? Takes perfectly good children, and afflicts them (or allows them to be made) crippled, distorted, and maimed, un-whole to bring people to a deeper spirituality?
You’d do the same thing wouldn’t you?
We know in our core that the deformed child is not supposed to be deformed. Something is wrong. Sickness is wrong. Disease is wrong. Sickness and disease in the soul is wrong. It may be common, but it’s not normal. It’s not like God.
“But we live in a fallen world.” Sure do. But we’re not mere men. We’re new creations in Christ who subdued the world, the flesh and the devil. And guess who lives in us?
The devil is bad. He makes people sick and bound. God is good. He makes people free.
If sickness and disease was the best way to sanctify a person or strengthen them in righteousness, they would have been the first thing inflicted on Jesus. Jesus grew in obedience, wisdom and in favor with God and man without ever having the flu, let alone cancer. Jesus is God’s method for maturing in faith, and sickness has absolutely no part in it.
In the whole of humanity and the Bible few things are more feared, hated and repugnant than sickness and disease. It is incipient death and entirely opposed to God’s intentions. It is the initial manifestation of the spirit of death. Think about it. If not arrested, where does disease lead?
We must ask, to what degree have we made comfortable accommodations in our faith and in our thought life for the foul and abhorrent near-friendship with the enemy of life. So egregious to God was this nemesis the He made a covenant with His children swearing by His name: Jehovah Rapha: The LORD your HEALER. I will take away sickness from among you. Ex 23:25
When God reveals His Name as Jehovah-rapha - The LORD who Heals, He makes a promise. He swears an oath to heal. In Jesus’ atonement, that oath was physically, spiritually and universally accomplished and manifested in time and space.
The notion of sickness and disease does not exist in God. And He has expressed His will to destroy it in His children through Jesus Christ. What does God think about disease? Look at Jesus. Do you see in Christ at any moment an accommodation for disease?
If the question is, “Is it God’s will to heal?” Jesus is His YES! and AMEN!
