Jesus declares Himself, the Way. He explains that partly in Jn. 14:24b by saying: He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.
Are we not supposed to have the same relationship with Jesus as He had with the Father? I realize I’m stating the obvious by noting that Jesus lived to hear and speak and do what the Father disclosed. It’s often the obvious that ‘occurs’ to me and stuns me.
What was the ‘Way'? It was the continuous disclosures of the Father showing and telling His Son the stuff of His heart - His desires, affections, and intentions. Then, the Son making what He saw and heard the food and drink and delight of His life.
Thomas was only asking directions to the place Jesus said He was going. Jesus knocks him into next week with His answer, saying in effect, ‘I’m the directions and the destination. I am all you could ever imagine wanting. I am the fulfillment of the deepest longings you don’t know you have. And, I’m the beginning and end of all truth. Furthmore, I am the original and everlasting life. Just sayin’!'
I imagine Thomas in complete bewilderment, saying simply, “Oh.”
