When Jesus spoke by the Spirit saying, Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; . . . because I go to the father, he spoke the words of the sovereign God to us. The same kind of words as those spoken by the Ancient of Days when he set the foundations of the earth; when He established the motions of the planets.
Jesus speaks from His place as the image of the invisible God, as the One by whom, and for whom, all things were created, and in whom all things consist. His power, His love and His works were created from everlasting, that we might walk in them. These do not begin or originate because we’ve just now become aware them, and wish to walk in them. They are in place, established, set in motion, like the spinning solar systems, like the tide’s coming in and going out. These matters are not reconstituted day by day. God said to the oceans, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed. Job 38:11
Forever, O Lord thy word is settled in heaven.
In this context, now consider and repeat Jesus’ words: Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. Jn 14:12-14
In all of human history no man ever uttered such extravagant words. No such notion, no such promise was ever conceived or articulated by the human race prior to Jesus’ declaration of it.
But, the Son of God did made this promise - swearing by Himself - to fulfill it in anyone who will believe Him.
Jesus extends to us this inexhaustible gift which never expires. Even as I write this, my imagination is bursting and sputtering all at once.
Will I believe Jesus’ words? Will I walk with Him? Will you?
